In March 2007, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were killed while responding to a domestic dispute by someone not directly involved in the fight. Demeatrius Antonio Montgomery is serving a life sentence in the killings of officers Jeffrey Shelton and Sean Clark. One other member of the task force, which is made up of federal agents and other officers from across the region was injured.

Even though a part of the job does result in violations, code enforcement officers’ main objective is to ensure an attractive, lawful and safe community. From New York to Texas to Alabama, law enforcement officials have warned for years that relaxing gun laws would lead to more violence toward police. The fatal shooting of a local police officer and three members of a fugitive task force in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday seems to bear those fears out. This is a great question, and one that can not be easily answered in a simple sentence.
But encouraging armed self-defense also creates deep expectations in the U.S. that gun ownership is absolute, experts say. It also makes it hard to tell good guys from bad guys – especially when police can no longer confront citizens wearing guns in public. Between 2015 and 2021, the number of concealed-carry permit holders in the United States grew from 14 million to 21.5 million.

The task force was fired on by the wanted suspect as they approached the house and the man was killed in the front yard, Jennings said. Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, who was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony to elude out of Lincoln County. During a news conference Monday afternoon, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was called to a home to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force is headquartered in Charlotte and comprised of 70 federal, state and local agencies.

The neighborhood, of one– and two-story, brick homes and small trimmed lawns, is very safe, said Alex Rivera, who lives on a street nearby. WSOC-TV said their helicopter captured an armored vehicle driving through yards and knocking over recycling bins before officers removed a person with blood on their shirt who was then loaded into an ambulance. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department has been continuously sharing updates on X. On Monday night, the department shared that a procession carried CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer’s body from the hospital to the Medical Examiner’s Office. In 2023, however, North Carolina Republicans suddenly pulled a constitutional-carry bill from a floor vote.
We have to coordinate with police, which includes traffic accidents, physical attacks, deaths and deplorable conditions. As I said before, code enforcement is not an easy job and it is not for the faint-hearted. Unfortunately, there are minimal outlets for code enforcement officers to go to about these issues.

You can add on to your house if there is enough room in your yard and the addition meets the current NC building codes. Contact the appropriate zoning jurisdiction for your area regarding set-backs and space requirements for the addition. If there are different contractors installing low voltage wiring, each contractor will need to submit separate permit applications. If this wiring is part of a larger overall project under construction, the Electrical permit application will need to have the six (6) digit county project number of the larger project.
Much of that shift is driven by what gun rights activists call a “good guy with a gun” scenario that, in effect, enlists parts of the population to help keep the peace. In 2023, North Carolina Republicans suddenly pulled a constitutional-carry bill, with part of the resistance coming from the state sheriffs association. As Charlotte residents watched a procession for one of the fallen officers Tuesday, there was a sense that more could be done to protect the protectors.
I was ecstatic to hear my name; “Erica” called for the varsity cheer team. After college I began working and pursuing a career for myself. Because of my love for children I decided to look into volunteer work involving the youth. In 2009 I was given the opportunity to be an assistant coach for C-Meck Cowboys. Thereafter, I became Head Coach and volunteered my services for 5yrs. There’s a quote that states, “When you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life”.

I assumed there was a mistake and perhaps my name was on the football roster in error. I began to scroll slowly through the football player’s roster, but there was no “Erica”. After that day I never tried out for cheer again, until I got to college. My sophomore year I decided to try out for the Luv-A-Bulls cheer team, who had just won the National Championship the previous year. I worked very hard to learn the material and was determine to give it my all come audition day. Shortly after auditioning both teams, JV and Varsity were selected.

I was raised in a small town called Stanley, NC. I was 8 years old and b/c of my athletic capabilities at a young age, I assumed there was no sport I couldn’t do. My mom signed me up for cheer and I went to every practice eager to learn the material, as I was determined to make the team. I practiced so much around the house; my parents would yell, “sit down”. I went in the gym with 4 other girls and put on a show, so I thought. I left out the audition feeling really good and excited about becoming a cheerleader.

All cheerleaders and football players were told to be back at the gym at 6pm to view the roster of those who made the team. When we returned to the gym to view the roster, I took off running to the door certain my name would be on the list. I scrolled through the names very fast, but did not see my name. I decided to slow down and look carefully b/c I must have passed my name, but my name wasn’t on the Cheerleader roster.
We’re brewing this beer to bring awareness to the plight of land based turtles and tortoises and the wonderful organization that leads this good fight – the Turtle Survival Alliance. Martin House will be making a donation to these fine folks, and we hope to recruit you, our faithful beer drinking customers, to become involved as well. Established March 2012, Martin House Brewing Company has been a staple of the Texas craft beer movement. A big part of this is because Jon Taffer and the show invested in a $125,000 draft beer system for the bar. At the normal six-week check-in with the Bar Rescue producers, we learn that drink sales at the bar are up by 30%. Bar Rescue invested a ton of money into the bar, as it’s supposedly the most expensive Bar Rescue renovation of all time. Neil Witte is also brought in to help the bar because he is a draft beer expert.
Texas Attracted California Techies. Now It’s Losing Thousands of Them.
With just one sip of Stars Above, the sweet raspberry flavor will hit you right off the bat. That sweetness is balanced by the tartness that kicks on the back-end, culminating in the perfect summertime beer. Plenty of cascade hops marry beautifully with the juicy grapefruit flavor we get from a generous addition of grapefruit peel. The lower 5% alcohol content makes this sessionable, thirst-quenching beer satisfy all day long. Roasted hatch chile peppers and lime infuse this limited release with a zesty kick.

Apparently there was one bartender and it took my friend 20 minutes to get a drink to bring back to the table. The complaints range from the food to the service to the atmosphere…pretty much everything about the bar. The bar is also more self-sustaining, which means that Richard doesn’t have to pull money from his family’s business. On the relaunch, customers are pleased with the new décor, food, and drinks.

Lastly, we serenaded the yeast with non-stop Toadies music to give it just hint of Rock ‘n’ Roll. This is how the official beer of the Toadies, Rubberneck Red, was born. Its an easy-drinking, refreshing beer with enough flavor to get excited about. When Martin House opened in 2013, its initial core beer lineup included the easy-drinking Day Break 4-Grain Breakfast Beer, a 5-percent-alcohol blond ale brewed with honey and milk sugar.
Martin House Juice
Its flavor is reminiscent of a sports drink at the end of a 110 degree day. This philanthropic seasonal was inspired by a Turtles favorite treat – blackberries. It turns out that brewers love blackberries as much as their reptilian cohorts. The strong malt and hop body of this altbier mixes well with the flavor of the blackberries for an excellent fall time treat.
Made with Munich and crystal malts and an insane charge of late addition American hops, this double red ale has a profusion of hop aroma. Released a few days prior to that sun-soaked shindig, six-packs of sour pickle beer cans had flown off grocery shelves across North Texas, even earning the brewery a few national headlines. But for many of those partaking in the puckering fun, inventive Martin House beer was something they had already come to count on. Stars Above is a refreshing sour ale brewed with raspberries.
Deck the Halls and Pass the Ham: Texas Monthly’s Christmas Menu
We wanted something lower in alcohol so it could be enjoyed from the opening act until the epic Toadies encore. We built the recipe with caramel and Munich malts to give the beer a solid malty flavor, a bold red color, and 5% alcohol. We went easy on the bittering hops and heavy on the flavor hops to give it just the right amount tropical fruit and piney flavor.
Its about 14% abv and the barrels added a pronounced whiskey flavor while also complimenting the original vanilla additions. The remaining spices we added back in December have had time to mellow and become a bit more subtle. It’s name is close to the more familiar October beers you’ve heard of, but it doesn’t have much more in common. The Martin House fall seasonal is brewed to 6% abv with oats, caramel malts, and cherry wood smoked malts. We use a Munich malts for the base of this beer giving it defined malty flavor, perfect for the fall weather. The smoked malts give the beer just a hint of smoke flavor.
The category has grown into a significant portion of the brewery’s business, with one out of every five Martin House beers sold now fitting into the “unusual” category. By the final months of 2019, local taps were pouring the resulting concoctions. These beers, too, had drawn sizable crowds for release parties.
The queue snaked from the brewery’s front door for at least a half-mile, west down Fourth Avenue and onto the bridge stretching over the West Fork of the Trinity River, toward downtown. Year round, seasonal / special releases, and taproom only beers. Catch the seasonal and taproom only beers while you can as they might never come back. Rum Barrel-Aged Sour with Orange, Pineapple, and Coconut. That’s the question Cody Martin kept hearing from the customers who drank his beers and the bars that served them.
They avoid tradition in favor of adventure, both in brewing and in life. They value good ingredients and good people, and each of the beers they offer pairs perfectly with life’s memorable moments. Martin House Brewing Company wants to be the handcrafted beer you and your friends choose when celebrating your most recent adventure or planning the next one. Cole says that sweet and sour pie-themed beers such as Key Lime Pie, Lemon Icebox Pie, and Blackberry Cobbler have been big hits. Released in July 2019, the Drive-In Sour four-pack, with Sonic-inspired flavors like cherry limeade and orange cream, was crisp and refreshing far more than it was sticky or sweet.

This Week in Fort Worth: Panther Island and Delta-9 seltzers.
But the Sour Pickle beer felt different, both for the hype it created and for its extreme flavor. Sam “Shugg” Cole, the brewery’s director of marketing, remembers the Great Pickle Beer Craze of 2019 as a savory turning point. On a cloudless, scorching day in August 2019, something was clearly going on at Fort Worth’s Martin House Brewing Company. As the clock clicked toward noon, and the temperature seared close to 100 degrees, I joined a line of more than two hundred people.
Jon returns the next day and says he needs Richard to show more confidence before he will help rescue the bar. The bartender pours the beer the wrong way, asking him to make another beer. The Los Angeles Brewing Company, later renamed to LA Brew Co, was a Los Angeles, California bar that was featured on Season 4 of Bar Rescue.
Martin House True Love
Cole expects Mama’s Pumpkin Pie, a sour pumpkin pie beer for Thanksgiving, to rapidly exit the brewery. Martin House’s Best Maid Sour Pickle beer, brewed with juice from fellow Cowtown brand Best Maid, proved to be the perfect, if highly unusual, prize for sunburned, sweaty locals. Bright, refreshing, and pickled to the highest degree, the salty brew went down easy and made the day’s release party all the more festive.
A classic American-style IPA is good any time of the year, and thats why we are happy to bring you our Cellarman’s Reserve Single Hop IPA Series with year-round availability. In order to highlight the hops, the base of the beer is a simple recipe comprised only of 2-row and Munich malts. A 7% abv gives us just the right amount of balance for 65 IBUs of hoppy goodness coming from using only one single hop varietal for bittering, flavor, and dry-hopping additions. While its availability is year-round, the hops we use will not be.
Our version is soured in the kettle with a lactic culture. The tartness is tempered by salt additions from around the world and finished with coriander for a citrus and earthy touch. We ferment with our house saison yeast to put our own little spin on the style.
February’s Best Maid Spicy Pickle Beer, riding on the shoulders of its sour pickle sister from last year, was a hot, salty rush. Canning these tiny batches each week “takes more effort, and the margins are different,” Cole says. Most of the taproom exclusive four-packs go quickly—good luck tracking one down even a week after its release.
A Once Dry East Texas Town Now Has One of the Best Wine Lists in the State
They constantly wanted something new — so Martin House Brewing Company gave it to them, launching a deluge of microseasonals. That it smoothly switched gears to present a new in-house experience “is the only reason we’re able to keep the taproom alive,” Cole says. And the beer system was idiot proof, the draft beer system — Smart Brew, it’s called. That was just for the draft beer system – I imagine the overall renovation cost more than that, especially because of how big the bar was. LA Brew Co is the most expensive Bar Rescue renovation of the show.
We add generous portions of Chinook and Northern Brewer hops for flavor. While SeptemberFest is hoppier than most brown ales, its not overwhelming and compliments the maltiness perfectly. The brewers at Martin House were honored to work directly with the Toadies to develop a recipe that suited us both perfectly. More than anything, we wanted it to be a beer that the band would want to drink while they played music. We sat down with the band and tasted several beers together. They loved the hop flavor in the Imperial Texan, so thats where we started with this recipe.

From time to time, whenever our Cellarmen feel like it, we’ll switch out that single hop. While the beer overall will remain the same, the drinker will get to experience the nuances of each hop varietal. We put it in some Colorado whiskey barrels and let it hang out. Whatever happened in those barrels for 7 months created this wonderful beer we call Christmas in July.
Over the next several years, founders Cody Martin, David Wedemeier, and Adam Myers garnered a small but loyal following by selling high-quality examples of traditional beer styles. Two favorites were the Imperial Texan, a full-flavored imperial red ale, and the rich, malty Bockslider Toadies Texas Bock, concocted in partnership with local rock legends the Toadies. The Salty Lady is our interpretation of a Gose – a rather obscure, tart, salty German style beer.

2 weeks before they started calling and emailing about the copay. They made us feel like if it was not paid in full, surgery would be cancelled. All the nurses kept us informed and he was up and walking with a walker shortly after surgery. The only thing is the staff wears the badges backwards so you cannot see their name. I am not sure why they do this, but it would be nice to see their names. They also ask you to bring your home walker but it really is a waste.

In Congress, Mr. Johnson has voted for a national abortion ban and co-sponsored a 20-week abortion ban, earning him an A-plus rating from the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. After the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in June last year, he celebrated. A social conservative, Mr. Johnson played a leading role in recruiting House Republicans to sign a legal brief supporting a lawsuit seeking to overturn the results. Johnson says that he will bring to the floor “in just a little while” a resolution in support of Israel. “We’re going to show not only Israel but the entire world that the barbarism of Hamas" is "wretched and wrong,” he said.
Speaker of the House: Rep. Mike Johnson
The House elects a new speaker by roll call vote when it first convenes after a general election for its two-year term, or when a speaker dies, resigns or is removed from the position intra-term. The speaker’s visit marks the first time the top representative in the U.S. House has visited a college campus amid ongoing protests that have led to tense exchanges between pro-Palestinian and Jewish students. More than 100 people on Columbia’s campus were recently arrested and charged with trespassing, with several students who took part in the protest facing suspension just weeks before year’s end.

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy has no business in Congress’ highest office or the presidential line of succession. Her late father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., served as Mayor of Baltimore for twelve years, after representing the city for five terms in Congress. She and her husband, Paul Pelosi, a native of San Francisco, have five grown children and ten grandchildren. Currently serving as Speaker Emerita of the House and as the Representative for California’s 11th Congressional District, she is fighting For The People to lower costs, grow paychecks and create jobs.
House SpeakerJohnson Elected Speaker of the House, Ending Weeks of Chaos
Pelosi is the chief architect of generation-defining legislation under two Democratic administrations, including the Affordable Care Act and the American Rescue Plan. She led House Democrats for 20 years and previously served as House Democratic Whip. In 2013, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement. Nancy Pelosi served as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives, having made history in 2007 when she was elected the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. She made history again in January 2019 when she regained her position second-in-line to the presidency – the first person to do so in more than six decades. The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives is the head of the United States House of Representatives.
Last month, Greene unveiled a motion to remove Johnson as speaker, although she has not yet moved to force a vote on the matter. In the past week, two more House Republicans – Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Paul Gosar of Arizona – have signed on as co-sponsors. Simply getting the bills to a vote on the foor required Johnson to seek help from Democrats across the aisle. A procedural vote to get it to the floor was , with 165 Democrats and 151 Republicans supporting the motion. The passed bills will be combined into a single package to simplify the voting process for the Senate, which will need to reapprove the proposal before it can go to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. Of course, members of the latter group don’t admit to the impossibility of their goals; that would ruin the con.
Democratic Party
She also secured passage of the “Pelosi Amendment” in 1989, now a global tool used to assess the potential environmental impacts of development. Some hard-right Republicans consider themselves a distinct political party from their more mainstream, business-minded colleagues, whom they accuse of being in a “uniparty” with Democrats. Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 House Republican and the first to be nominated for speaker following Mr. McCarthy’s ouster, was ultimately seen as insufficiently pro-Trump by too many of his colleagues. He also opposed legislation to mandate federal recognition for same-sex marriages — a bill that passed with strong bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. He said that millions of unborn children had lost their lives because of what he called a “legal fiction that the Supreme Court foisted upon this country” and said that “God will bless us” for the court’s decision. But even more than his election denialism, Mr. Johnson’s political career has been defined by his religious views.
Twenty-five Republicans voted against the fourth bill, which included measures that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States and that would redirect funds from seized Russian assets to help aid Ukraine. Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them. A crowd of students, swelling as Johnson and his colleagues began speaking, intermittently laughed and yelled that they couldn’t hear the congressman or his colleagues. The students booed the speaker, chanted in support of Palestine, including “Free Palestine,” “Stop the genocide” and “From the river to the sea,” a phrase that some say constitutes antisemitic speech.
Republicans nominate Mike Johnson for speaker after spurning Emmer.
The speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the United States House of Representatives. The House elects its speaker at the beginning of a new Congress (i.e. biennially, after a general election) or when a speaker dies, resigns, or removed from the position intra-term. Since 1839, the House elected speakers by roll call.[1] Traditionally, each party's caucus or conference selects a candidate for the speakership from among its senior leaders prior to the roll call. From early in its existence, the speaker's primary function had been to keep order and enforce rules. Furthermore, when no candidate received an Electoral College majority in the 1824 presidential election, causing the president to be elected by the House, Speaker Clay threw his support to John Quincy Adams instead of Andrew Jackson, thereby ensuring Adams' victory. Following Clay's retirement in 1825, the power of the speakership once again began to decline, despite speakership elections becoming increasingly bitter.
The Israel bill includes about $4.4bn to replenish depleted US supplies given to Israel; $4bn for missile defense, including the much-vaunted Iron Dome, and $1.2bn for the Iron Beam; and $3.5bn to help Israel buy weapons. There are also provisions to make it easier to supply Israel with US munitions held in other countries. Sergii Marchenko, the Ukrainian finance minister, pointed to the legislation’s provision for budget support. For the last few years, congressional Republicans have been split into factions that are not ideological in the traditional sense.
It will need to come up as a suspension vote — an expedited process that requires a two-thirds majority for passage. The House is expected to vote on a resolution in support of Israel on Wednesday afternoon, according to a notice from the House Democratic whip. House Speaker Mike Johnson entered the speaker's office for the first time after being sworn in, with his new name plate hanging above the door.
But many previous speakers, including outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have ascended to the dais with fewer votes than that, as some members voted present instead of calling out a name. Every lawmaker voting “present” lowers the overall tally needed to reach a majority. Any candidate for speaker can lose only a handful of votes and still win the speakership because Republicans hold such a small majority in the House. In a secret-ballot vote on Tuesday night, Mr. Johnson got 128 votes, with 44 Republicans voting for nominees not on the ballot, including 43 for Mr. McCarthy, whom many view as unfairly ousted.
Information about the source, type, amount, or value of the incomes of representatives, officers, and candidates. Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond. The outgoing speaker will usually join the successor at the speaker’s chair, where they will pass the gavel as a nod to the peaceful transition of power from one party leader to another.
But when he left after the 1924 session, his party was still firmly in control and had just elected President Calvin Coolidge to a full term. The well-respected No. 2 Republican, Eric Cantor of Virginia, had lost his primary in 2014. The No. 3, McCarthy, soon ran aground over remarks in a TV interview and lacked the votes to be speaker. The party settled on Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who had not sought the gavel but agreed to take it. In 1994, two years into the presidency of Democrat Bill Clinton, Gingrich organized a campaign around a 10-item agenda called the "Contract with America." It provided a unified message for the party's nominees, who flipped more than 50 seats and stormed into the majority. The 30-year saga began with Gingrich of Georgia, who was the first member of his party to gain "the big gavel" since the early 1950s and the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Friday night, Mr. McCarthy remained one vote short of what he needed to seal the deal. Representative-elect Eli Crane of Arizona and Representative Matt Rosendale of Montana — the two holdouts who seemed most likely to move — both voted against him, leaving his fate in the hands of his lead tormentor, Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida. The floor fight dragged on for the better part of a week, the longest since 1859, and paralyzed the House, with lawmakers stripped of their security clearances because they could not be sworn in as official members of Congress until a speaker was chosen. Despite the divisions on display, Mr. McCarthy also emphasized the theme of unity in a speech after taking the speaker’s gavel, pledging open debate and an open door to both Republicans and Democrats. After a spectacle of arm-twisting on the House floor, Kevin McCarthy won over just enough of the far-right rebels he needed to become speaker.
It includes member of the Los Angeles City Council, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, California State Assembly, California State Senate, United States House of Representatives, and Los Angeles citywide officials. Basil Rodriguez, 23, argued Wednesday that Johnson and any lawmaker who backed sending aid to Israel is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Palestinians. The hearing launched further investigations by the committee and continual hearings to combat antisemitism on college campus, ending in Shafik’s Capitol Hill testimony last Wednesday.
There are more questions about how Mr. Rosendale and Mr. Crane may behave in the next round. Mr. Rosendale has signaled there are rules changes that could win him over, although it’s not clear what’s left to give him to appease him. Mr. Gaetz, Mr. McCarthy’s chief antagonist, has accused the G.O.P. leader of selling his soul to lobbyists and of pursuing the speakership because of his own vanity. Even before the votes had been secured, many at the bar seemed convinced that electing a speaker was inevitable as the vote drew closer to a close.
“I personally like Tim Burchett": McCarthy says he never meant to offend lawmaker's religion
Lawmakers call out the name of their choice for speaker from the floor, a rare and time-consuming roll call that heightens the drama. Members often liven up the proceedings by shouting or standing when casting their vote. In the 111th Congress, Speaker Pelosi led the House passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to rescue the nation from the depths of the financial crisis, helping create or save millions of American jobs. Her leadership in enshrining the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law helped restore the ability of women to fight pay discrimination in the courts and ensure they too could participate in the economic recovery. Pelosi also led the Congress in enacting the historic Dodd-Frank reforms to rein in big banks and create strong protections for consumers, seniors and Servicemembers.
Goldberg: For Israel and Ukraine alike, U.S. support is proving unreliable and inadequate
When the witness, Dr. Yashica Robinson, a board member for Physicians for Reproductive Health, responded that such a situation had never occurred, Mr. Johnson only doubled down. When Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana wanted to make the case against abortion rights last year during a Capitol Hill committee hearing, he grilled a witness in graphic fashion. Mr. Johnson came to Congress in 2017 with support from the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, though he has never joined the group. Over a year later, on “Truth Be Told,” the Christian podcast he hosts with his wife, Kelly, Mr. Johnson continued to argue that he and his colleagues had been right to object to the election results. Evoking his evangelical Christian faith, Mr. Johnson repeatedly referred to scripture in his speech from the House floor.
Representatives
“That remains an issue to be resolved,” said Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, as he shuttled between meetings on Thursday. She told The Hill shortly after starting the job that she had taken diction classes to prepare and had done a three-minute audition that involved reading out a resolution, amendment, handwritten amendment, presidential message and bill. The House is back to the floor for its 14th vote for speaker, and the one that Representative Kevin McCarthy is saying will finally clinch the deal for him.

According to him, embracing and leveraging its pluralism would propel Nigeria towards a more unified and prosperous future where the collective strengths of its diverse population would be fully harnessed. Tajudeen, who was represented by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, said Nigeria’s pluralism and its vast diversity in ethnicity, language, and religion remain a valuable asset to the nation. Biden urged Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from retaliation against Iran even though its attack appeared to defy the president’s own warning after Oct. 7. One faction, comprising an overwhelming majority of the House GOP caucus, is interested in accomplishing the possible.
The Senate had quietly slipped out of the city while insurgents in the House demanded more power as the nation watched anxiously. Ms. Alli and Ms. Cole work under the clerk of the House of Representatives, Cheryl L. Johnson, who is charged with keeping lawmakers in order until a new speaker is elected. Two Republicans who were absent for personal reasons from votes earlier in the day, Ken Buck of Colorado and Wesley Hunt of Texas, were expected to be back in time for the vote. That would mean Mr. McCarthy needs just two more in his column, and potentially just one if two or more of his opponents do not vote or vote present.
California holds the key to GOP power in the House. McCarthy’s retirement makes everything harder
“The door to the speaker’s office now is open to the members and to the constituents, not just the lobbyists,” Rep. Matt Rosendale told reporters. But the speech infuriated Mr. Trump, and Mr. McCarthy quickly worked to get back in the former president’s good graces, traveling to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, three weeks later to meet with him. They also were unhappy that he had suggested in an interview on Fox News that the House committee investigating the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, had the political aim of damaging Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Yet that style has appeared uniquely ill-suited to the challenge Mr. McCarthy faces of corralling a restive group of ideologically driven House Republicans that is obsessed with legislative details and skilled at procedural disruption.

Johnson Outlines Plan for Ukraine Aid; House Could Act Within Weeks
“I think the House is in a lot better place with some of the work that’s been done to democratize power out of the speakership, and that’s our goal,” he said. Mr. McCarthy agreed to allow a single lawmaker to force a snap vote at any time to oust the speaker, a rule that he had previously refused to accept, regarding it as tantamount to signing the death warrant for his speakership in advance. Mr. McCarthy, who rarely moved from his seat over the days of votes, approached Mr. Gaetz and Ms. Boebert in their seats and appeared to be pleading with them to change their votes, his signature smile wiped from his face.
October 3, 2023 - Kevin McCarthy ousted as Speaker of the House
Representative Pete Aguilar of California, the Democratic conference chairman, said that the speaker fight had devolved into a contest over “who can appease Donald Trump.” At that line, a handful of hard-right Republicans stood and applauded. In a speech that traced his ascent up the political ladder in Louisiana to Congress, Mr. Johnson pledged to try to “restore the people’s faith in this House.” He cited sending aid to Israel, fixing a “broken” southern border, and reining in federal spending as his top legislative priorities. “You have this moment in time where McCarthy wants it so badly and has just been raked over the coals for an awesome four days,” exulted Russ Vought, the president of the right-wing Center for Renewing America, as he listed the concessions the Republican leader had offered. As the voting dragged on, it became clear that Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, who has emerged as Mr. McCarthy’s chief adversary, would become the deciding vote. And when Mr. Gaetz voted “present,” depriving Mr. McCarthy of the majority support he needed, the California Republican blanched, stood up from his seat and walked across the House floor to speak to Mr. Gaetz himself. The 118th version of the Senate did the same this week, convening for a celebratory induction of new members and the swearing in of re-elected senators on Tuesday, then quickly fleeing the capital for three weeks to allow the House to occupy the political stage alone.
Speaker Gingrich would regularly clash with Democratic President Bill Clinton, leading to the United States federal government shutdown of 1995 and 1996, in which Clinton was largely seen to have prevailed. Gingrich's hold on the leadership was weakened significantly by that and several other controversies, and he faced a caucus revolt in 1997. After the Republicans lost House seats in 1998 (although retaining a majority) he did not stand for a third term as speaker. His successor, Dennis Hastert, had been chosen as a compromise candidate since the other Republicans in the leadership were more controversial. Hastert played a much less prominent role than other contemporary speakers, being overshadowed by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and President George W. Bush.
Unable to overcome the opposition from a band of progressive Republicans, supporters of Mr. Gillett kept pushing the House into adjournment to allow back-room talks about how to resolve the stalemate, another tactic being employed this time around as the vote tallies remain inconclusive. A welcome winter rain has tamped down the Central Valley dust, but high winds have sent tumbleweeds bounding down the city’s wide boulevards. “I think it’s great that Matt Gaetz has a group up there that’s bringing attention to what’s wrong,” said William Paulovitz, 78, referring to the firebrand Florida Republican who has been one of the far-right rebels blocking Mr. McCarthy’s bid for speaker. Mr. Paulovitz, a retired businessman, dismissed his representative’s run for speaker in a place that representative knows all too well — outside Luigi’s, a popular lunch eatery that has long been a piece of Mr. McCarthy’s self-spun Bakersfield lore. The Republican divisions obstructing Mr. McCarthy’s decade-long ambition of becoming speaker of the House have been playing out on both the national stage in Washington and a far smaller though equally telling one in his hometown and home district. It is easier to find detractors on his far-right flank than die-hard supporters, in what should be friendly home turf for California’s top Republican — one of the reddest cities in one of the bluest states in the country.
Mr. McCarthy still wins re-election in the district with two-thirds of the vote, but the passionate minority of the majority has become his Achilles’ heel, as it has been on the House floor this week. Former President Donald J. Trump made a crucially timed call to Representative Matt Gaetz on Friday night after the Florida congressman voted “present” and sunk Kevin McCarthy’s 14th effort to be elected House speaker. The vitriolic attack on the top candidate for speaker from a member of his own party led some of Mr. McCarthy’s supporters to walk off the House floor while he spoke.
Those eight years actually made Hastert the longest-serving Republican speaker in history. But any luster left after 2006 was lost when he went to prison for bank fraud charges stemming from hush money payments he had made to a former student he admitted to having sexually abused decades earlier. Even a glance at the history of Republican speakers since World War II would tell him that. A member of a joint program between the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia, he was in the crowd watching Johnson speak.
No credible evidence has ever emerged to support the conspiracy theories about Dominion and another voting machine firm having helped to ensure Mr. Trump’s defeat. In April, Fox News agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation suit by Dominion over reports broadcast by Fox that Dominion machines were susceptible to hacking and had flipped votes from Mr. Trump to Mr. Biden. The election on Wednesday of Mr. Johnson, 51, to the post second in line to the presidency has focused new attention on his behind-the-scenes role in trying to overturn the election results on behalf of former President Donald J. Trump. Johnson praises former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, unceremoniously deposed three weeks ago. Says “he is the reason we are in this majority today,” a nod to his political skills.

The Crown Princess Ship Offers Good Entertainment Options
Cruising can often be pretty cheap if you want it to be but you have to work at making it cheap. It can be very easy to let the dollars mount as you upgrade cabins, buy packages, add excursions etc. Just say “no” to expensive alcohol packages, onboard sales, spa treatments, and bingo. Refreshed during a dry dock in 2018, the ship was embellished with new offerings, such as super comfortable Princess Luxury Beds in every room, rebranded poolside dining options and an upgraded kids' center.
Caribbean Princess Dress Code
There is still a lot included in the price and many cruisers don’t spend much more than that, if at all. It’s up to you whether you want to buy alcoholic beverages or take excursions. But the shows, games, main dining room, pool, etc are available to you.
Princess Cruises Tips, Activities, and Overview
Those familiar with Princess cruise line won’t be surprised to learn that Caribbean Princess’ deck plans are well designed and easy to navigate. With a smart layout that offers good separation between busy public spaces and cabins, nights are generally quiet in most staterooms. Even on the few decks where there’s a mix of both – i.e., decks 5, 6 and 15 – most cabins are far enough from the public areas that get most foot traffic and noise. The only exception would be Deck 6 (Fiesta), whose suites are surrounded by the theater, the shops, and Crown Grill. Those, along with cabins on Deck 14 midship and aft, may very well be the only Caribbean Princess cabins to avoid if getting a good night’s sleep is a priority for you.
Who goes on Princess cruise ships?
Royal Princess shines in its partnerships and programming, even if these lack major signage and branding within the daily Princess Patter. Chocolatier Norman Love's Chocolate Journey desserts stand out from the menu. The North to Alaska enrichment lectures, such as a talk by Libby Riddles, the first female Iditarod winner, were excellent.
We don't get any packages, and we always have a wonderful carefree pretty much AI experience for the entire family. Many, many people go in cruises every year and don’t buy anything more than the basic travel and they have a wonderful time. They aren’t worried about what other people on the ship get that they don’t get.
Cruising is not for everyone and if you decide not to cruise then that is a perfectly good decision for you. For some people they only need the bare basics of accommodation, food, water and entertainment to make a cruise a wonderful holiday especially if the stops are places they want to visit. You normally don't need to spend a small fortune on excursions... However, others want the extras of drinks packages, wifi, and many love the ship excursions or health spa services, private cabanas, speciality dining. But you really don't need all that stuff to have a good time.
How much does it cost to go on Crown Princess?
Plenty of people do it on the cheap, don't drink and stick to the included offers you won't feel out of place and not fitting in. I know it is a bitter pill, but you might be better off just losing the 600 pounds and booking a much cheaper one-week cruise. Our costs before we even step on ship are £5k approx without the Plus package or any up selling which will occur either closer to the time or on board. The customer experience is something I feel really strongly about as I've worked in customer experience my entire life and this felt like an absolute kick in the teeth and sod the customer.
More about Princess Cruises
Built in 2004, Caribbean Princess underwent extensive renovations in 2019. The refurbishment brought a wide array of upgrades to cabins and the kids’ splash area, as well as a variety of new restaurants. In addition, the ship has had much drydock work done over the years (the most recent one being in early 2022), which has kept it in good shape and feeling up to date. It's not just all silly fun -- some of the ship's best attractions are more cultured. Trivia is standing-room-only and full of die-hard players, art lectures and auctions are well attended and the best stage show is full of operatic arias.
Passengers on Caribbean Princess also eat up destination talks and enjoy participating in arts and crafts, and musical instrument lessons inspired by the locales the ship visits. Consider sharing your journey with your fellow Cruise Critic members as-it-happens by posting a live thread detailing your cruise. In addition to asking questions, you can also use Cruise Critic’s unique Roll Call feature to connect with folks onboard the same sailing as you – all before you’ve ever set foot aboard your ship. @CruiseLibre As others have mentioned, you should cancel your cruise and move on.
